AVG Antivirus

Published by Grisoft, this is one of the best antivirus programs on the market.  It comes in both a free-for-home-use and corporate (non-free) edition.  It is powerful, easy to use and has a nice interface – in other words, it’s pretty to look at.  At the same time, AVG will not slow down your system like some of the “bigger” programs.  Make sure you download the free edition!

Tech Tip - Uncheck the AVG toolbar unless you plan to buy the program.

CCleaner

Looking to remove temporary folders that Microsoft stores randomly all over your hard drive?  Want to clean out registry problems safely and effectively?  Then this is the program for you!  Unlike other “registry cleaners”, CCleaner is not a virus or spyware, does not slow your system down and is full-featured right from the download – none of that “click to buy” before you can actually use it.  The “Cleaner” and “Registry” buttons will take care of unwanted problems with just a couple of clicks of the mouse.  (Be careful, “Options” and “Tools” can override the safety protocols and allow you to delete anything, including your documents, Windows itself, etc.

OpenOffice

Want to work in Word but can’t afford the price tag?  We recommend you check out OpenOffice, a full-featured alternative to Microsoft Office.  Benefits of OpenOffice include the ability to open, modify and save Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, the ability to save directly to PDF (portable document file) format, and a wide-range of features that compare across the board with Microsoft.  Best of all, it’s free!

Spybot Search and Destroy

Looking for one of the best antispyware programs around?  Then look no further!  Spybot is simply one of the best.  Full-featured, it can run scans, actively protect your computer (using “TeaTimer”) and even block spyware before it reaches you!  We recommend installing without TeaTimer, however, as it will pop up a number of messages any time you make a change to your system.  (It just means that once a month, you will have to run the scans manually.)
